The Cure

I have to wonder what DC is planning with Barbara Gordon.

The mini that comes out this week is provocatively titled, after all. "Oracle: The Cure"? Yeah, that couldn't possibly be hinting at anything could it? The question really does become: are they really going to heal paralysis? Are they going to let her walk again?

But then, that question is only important to a degree. After all, if Barbara does regain the use of her legs that has absolutely no impact on her ability to be "Oracle." A "cure" is only important if they're planning to make her Batgirl again.

And would they really do that? Would they take a woman who is one of the strongest and most powerful characters in the whole of the DC Universe and make her call herself Batgirl? Especially when there's a Batwoman running around? Can you really see a woman like Barbara Gordan taking on the mantle of Batgirl again?

I can't. I just can't see it happening. I could see her becoming a Batwoman if there wasn't already one. But there is. So it won't happen. If there really is an upcoming Batgirl series it won't be Barbara Gordon starring. This whole thing is a fakeout.

There may be a new Batgirl or perhaps Cassandra Cain will retake the role. But I guarantee this: whatever happens to Barbara Gordon in Oracle: The Cure she'll still be Oracle by the end of it.

Unless she's not.

I feel rather torn about this. I do like Barbara as Oracle as opposed to Batgirl, and since we already HAVE both a Batgirl and a Batwoman, yet another one, would seem a tad redundant.

But if Oracle was no longer confined to her chair, would she be running around with the Birds of Prey punching people? It seems as though her computer skills would be of more service to the hero population than simply being another brawler.

Not to mention that they'd be wrecking one of the few great "disabled" characters.

Sure, not being able to walk doesn't affect her ass-kicking ability all that much - this is comics, after all - but it's still important to have good role models for every minority in comics. Handi-capable handicapped characters are needed every bit as much as positive female/gay/black/latino/asian/ect. characters.

"Curing" Barbra Gordan would ruin her.

I have it on good authority that the mini will be about Babs and Robert Smith teaming up to fight the League of Evil Rock Stars. Giant robots may or may not be involved...

PREDICTION:
DC will kill or injure Kathy Kane and Oracle will don her costume with a big reveal at end of "battle for cowl" crossover...
HINT: Battle for cowl poster shows Oracles wheelchair broken and Batwoman showing us some leg, a female hand crushed under a coffin...There was a reason they made Kathy Kane a red head and costume like Batgirl.
Birds of Prey: Batwoman/Oracle
Also Predict that Babs will continue to pretend to be in Wheelchair as part of her secret identity, and continue to be Oracle as well. No one will know the truth save a few heroes that can be trusted...what do you thinK?
