Where We Stand
A friend of mine recently mentioned that DC has been -- loosely paraphrased -- "in a slump." Basically he told me that DC has been pretty awful these past few years.
As the DC fan I am, I took some exception to that. Sure, I know as well as the next guy that DC continually trails in sales behind Marvel. But I just don't think that that means it's not putting out good stuff. Yes, the past few years have supplied us with some very poor DC comics/events. But consider some of the brilliant things that have come out of the past few years:
- The new Blue Beetle
- The new Booster Gold
- 52
- The Sinestro Corps War
- Jonah Hex
- Secret Six
Friends: can you name any other brilliantly amazing things that DC has put out in the past five years or so? I could probably name another dozen brilliant projects -- stories or series that are the equal of anything DC's distinguished rival produces.
Comment away.

52 + brilliant = HUH?
Afraid I can't agree to that one even a little. And I'm just not enough of a Johns booster to give any of his work more than a "mildly entertaining, sometimes" label. On the other hand the latest Metal Men and Suicide Squad minis were both pretty, damn cool. And while I found 52 to range from Meh to Suck, it did cause Azarello to put out his brilliant Dr. 13 mini...
And hell Giffen's writing Ambush Bug again. Thats always sweet...
Though honestly, the Big Two are pretty evenly matched when it comes to stuff that Sucks, Is Ok and if Effin' Awesome. Hell, all super-hero comics are pretty even when it comes to that...
Countdown to Mystery was pretty good...least the Doctor Fate storyline was, Steve Gerber was going in a really interesting place with Dr. Fate before he died.
Catwoman was pretty damn good too (course they cancelled it just now..grr)
Detective Comics with Dini writing it has just been fan-freaking-tastic.
Wonder Woman has actually become readable with Simone at its helm
Uncle Sam and the Freedom Fighters...nuff said.
Manhunter is excellent...and it's back!
Green Lantern and Green Lantern Corps are both superb in my admittedly biased opinion.
Jonah Hex is frikkin' fantastic.
Gail Simone on Wonder Woman has been awfully good. Gail Simone on the All-New Atom was amazing. Alas, Atom did not survive her departure, but it was fun while it lasted.
Justice Society with Geoff Johns and Dale Eaglesham has been excellent.
Fables is consistantly good. Jack of Fables is also a hoot.
With the arrival of Peter Tomasi, Nightwing has been goshdarned fun.
I'm also enjoying the Brave & the Bold, and Birds of Prey.
I have to agree alot of the best dv stuff is the stuff that isn't tied to the crossovers, like Hex and my other favorite Brave and the Bold. I may be in the minority here too but I am loving the new Titans book as well. also the green arrow/black canary book is one of my faves too.
Actually, whenever someone says that someone or something is in a slump or "not as good as it used to be," the first thing to do is to ask them for their basis of comparison. If they can't give you a specific answer, or if their answer is based on something that YOU don't personally care for (i.e., they're total Marvelites who don't have any room in their brains for outside content), then you can dismiss their opinion entirely. :-)
