Blackest Night #4

I think it's safe to say that Blackest Night #4 was my favorite comic of the entire year. If you've read it, I probably don't have to tell you about the two incredibly awesome pages that were right next to each other. It's as if Geoff Johns has been reading this blog and decided to write those pages just for me.

Have you been reading this blog, Geoff? Did you write those pages just for me?

Well, he probably hasn't and didn't. But they sure as hell made me happy just the same. I started laughing with a combination of giddiness and maniacalness when I read those two pages. They were awesome.

And I'm sure I won't be the only one who has something to say about them in the days to come...

So, addressing those points there be spoilers in this post.

Does it bother you that Azrael was confirmed as dead, and apparently guantletless? I realise none of us deserved him, but it's still upsetting. I suppose there's hope for the good doctor, as we only know he tore the heart out of Mr. Polaris, and he's been threatening to do that for awhile now.

Heh. I read it, and when I reached those particular pages, I had to stop and snicker, because I IMMEDIATELY thought of you.

Poor old Azrael. But Doctor Polaris ROCKS! Ripping the heart out of that miserable fake was such a stupendous move. Black Lantern or no, Doctor Polaris still has panache.

Jake,

Well, it's a little bit depressing to see that Az is indeed dead. But then, dead like this was probably the only place were were going to get the chance to see him anyway. I'm honestly happy he got mentioned at all.

As to the gauntlets, I'm not sure exactly what you mean. The ones he's wearing in the book aren't as detailed as the originals, but they seem to be more ore less correct. Looks to me like they even have three fingers...

Regardless, you're right that we really didn't deserve him. It's tragic.

Anyway, I think Doctor Polaris is probably pretty happy to be ripping people's hearts out. I'm sure he'll be weighing in on this soon.

I was very happy for you when I finally got around to reading it today. Good show.

I keep bringing up his gauntlets because as far as I know, Kate Spencer/Manhunter still has them. Their origin got something like an eight-page story in one of her issues.

Yes, I am complaining about the Black Lanterns being able to regrow his gauntlets.

Ah, now I see. But don't worry; there is an explanations for that. The gauntlets Kate Spencer possesses are the gauntlets Jean Paul Valley used when he was Batman.

The Azbats costume was only worn during that period, after which Azrael returned to his original, traditional gauntlets (which you can see him using in Blackest Night).

So you see, there really isn't a conflict here. Az didn't regrow the gauntles because he had them when he died! All is explained!

I'm really enjoying Blackest Night, and the longer it goes on (and the more characters who die) the more I'm sure that the vast majority of significant character deaths will be undone by the end, with a (temporary, obviously) moratorium on character deaths. That seems like it'd be an interesting lead-in to next year's "legacies" event that Didio has talked about.

It'd also be interesting to see how far they'd take such a story: imagine a world where Thomas and Martha Wayne, Jor-El and Lara, and other characters key to character origins were no longer deceased. Especially if the Waynes returned to discover not only their son's activities since their death, but also his death-without-resurrection.

Tom, that would be fascinating, but I think it's pretty unlikely.

The Waynes, the Graysons, and the Drakes kinda have to remain dead just to preserve their sons' motivations.

It's make for one hell of an Elseworlds story, though.
